A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MRS. LINDA KAY ROWAN CLIFTON FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Linda Kay Rowan Clifton, a dedicated educator for twenty-four years, has made many outstanding contributions to the field of education in the State of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Clifton, the daughter of Howard and Maxine Rowan, was born on September 23, 1949, in Baldwyn, Mississippi, and attended the public schools in Union County, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from high school, Mrs. Clifton furthered her education at Northeast Mississippi Community College, Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, throughout her career, Mrs. Clifton has loyally served as a teacher, counselor and principal in the public schools in Union County and the cities of Booneville and Tupelo, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Clifton has been recognized by the Mississippi Humanities Council as the 1998 Humanities Educator of the Year for the State of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Clifton also has received many awards for her tireless contributions to the students of Mississippi, including Star Teacher, Northeast Mississippi Counselor of the Year, Mississippi Counselor of the Year, SERVE's Dare to Dream Award and Woodmen of the World Conservation Award; and

WHEREAS, currently principal at Tupelo Middle School, Mrs. Clifton has led the schools under her direction to received notable awards for various programs such as the Colgate Award for Youth Services, the Public Education Forum Award, the Mississippi Exemplary School Award for Service Learning, the Southeastern Regional Vision for Education's National Award for Science Programs for Females, National Award for Environmental Science and the Mississippi Municipal Association's Keep Mississippi Moving Award; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to recognize and pay special tribute to remarkable educators such as Mrs. Linda Kay Rowan Clifton, who continues to provide outstanding educational leadership to the youth of our state in the public schools of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Mrs. Linda Kay Rowan Clifton for her exceptional contributions to the field of education in the State of Mississippi and extend to her our heartiest wishes for success in all her future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Linda Kay Rowan Clifton, Tupelo Middle School and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
